First tough day of the year. Caught about a 1/4 cooler - and we worked for ‘em. Had a guy on the boat who had never been and he was real excited. So we kept casting for a handful of shrimp per throw (well, he was doing most of the castin’ once I figured they just weren’t movin). If it woulda just been me, Ida been trout fishin an hour in.
But hey, beat the heck out of bein in the office all day. And an outstanding day for bein on the water.
thats funny i was like that once but hey run poles ten times and he might be ready next time or not… were you in bulls bay or elsewhere?
I was in Winyah Bay in Georgetown. Haven’t been shrimping in McClellanville area in several years. That drive from Murrells Inlet to Cowpens/BB (by boat or truck) is a long one. Adds 2-3 hours to the trip. They’re not quite as big in Winyah, but I’ve had pretty good luck catching them there the last few years. At least early in the season. The seem to taper off there in late October. Fortunately, I’d had 3 full cooler trips earlier, so it ain’t like the cupboard (freezer) is bare.
I think I’ll go fishin.
jusfishin, where you in Mud Bay?
- A bad day fishin’ is better than a good day at work!
same here been twice with son just cant seem to get them concentrated…Big size but not enough to brag about…Maybe just take some rods and use the shrimp for some reds or flounder…Been thinking about gettin som oysters instead…you can see them!!! But came up with an idea to use 5 poles instead of 10 that seems to work well…Place poles 20 yards apart in a straight line…Bait poles 5 yards to left and 5 yards to right of each pole.Run all 5 to left then all 5 to right for a complete run…then the poles that are producing should tell you to place more poles in those areas downstream…
I am no expert and the critters are sparse right now…I would suggest(like others here) to find the shrimp first at low tide by either throwing unbaited or just idling around until they start jumping out of the water to get away from the boat.
I enjoy fishing for reds and would love to meet someone to fish with…
Gamecock - hasn’t seemed to matter to me. I put in at the Rec, go by the wreck and go thru deepwater creek. Right as I come out from between those islands, I go right or left and set up. Tuesday I was on that flat to the right as you come out. But I’ve caught 'em there before. But I’ve also caught 'em to the left coming out of those islands. I’ve also NOT caught 'em to the right and left.
I think Tuesday it was just too sunny. Not a cloud in the sky. They just weren’t moving.
I think I’ll go fishin.
