This from Is Packet: A piece of construction equipment sinking into the marsh on Capers Island in Beaufort County doesn’t pose an immediate environmental risk, an S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control spokeswoman said Friday.

DHEC public information specialist Lindsey Evans said a track hoe – a heavy-construction vehicle on metal tracks used to dig and transport material – became stuck in a soft spot of marsh along an eroding beach on the island in April.

Evans said the owner quickly removed the fuel and hydraulic fluids from the track hoe to prevent them from leaking into the water. The owner also took measures to prevent any loose parts from breaking off of the track hoe in the surf and washing out to sea, Evans said.

ā€œThe owner has done everything he can to prevent an environmental hazard,ā€ Evans said.

Evans said DHEC was notified of the sinking track hoe April 22. Since then, the department has waited for the homeowner to submit a removal plan for DHEC to approve, she said.

I say mark it and leave it. It’s good structure to fish around.

This is what’s wrong with the picture. What the heck is the owner of the machine waiting on and why should a homeowner have to submit something to dhec for someone to drag it out of the water? Get 2 big dozers and some chain and drag it out.

Ok I’ve got to go back and find some of my local screw up pictures over the last few years. I’ll guarantee the owner did not drain the hyd system. That’s the one thing on submerged equipment that mostly doesn’t take a lot of damage usually a pretty well sealed system. Engine and Electrical… that’s another issue. Figure around here he is working low tide, hits a soft spot and sticks already a couple of feet below the surface. Tide comes in that could be 8’ of water.

Can’t find my hall of shame… just these few stuck ones.

Wow! That is a lot of money gone.

OMG, that’s the best one yet!!!

You know what, whomever is responsible should have a lien on all of their assets until that POS is removed. Abandoned boats are everywhere, abandoned crap is everywhere. A whole barge/fuel depot sits in Beresford. The Cooper below 526 looks like Armageddon.

Structure my azz. Obstructure. Lock 'em up if they can’t get their hoe out of the water. That’s why God made insurance.

Thought of you today, Bob. Any change in this or is it still sitting?

We did our annual oyster planting for the club today so we were on the Ashley. The dead and dying sail boats below Hwy 17 make me want to puke.

When 12" of algae is growing off of your anchor line, you are no longer a sailor. You are a hazard. And you need to pull your chit out my waters.

I’m just shocked that this stuff can be allowed to happen.
