I have been considering selling my power boat and getting a yak. I haven’t taken the powerboat out one time this year, It just sits in the yard while I continue to pay payments, ins. and property taxes on it. With a new wife wanting children, new car, and freeloading friends the outlook is bleak for taking the boat out this summer.
For some reason I think it would be much easier if I could throw my yak on top of car, and take off, I think I would get to fish much more often, without dredding the clean up at the end of the day. The draw back seems to be all of the paddling, limited space, and limited range of the yak. Some of my favorite fishing spots would have to sacrificed.
I guess I’m looking for some input from those that have delt with this or those that own both and prefer one over the other.
Do it SandS. You won’t regret it. I had a pontoon boat and a jonboat. I used my jonboat mostly, so I got rid of the pontoon boat and got a yak. Used my jonboat even less after I got the yak so I sold it too. Had a tough time carrying the right amount of stuff in the yak with me (carried way to much of stuff I never used). Finally paired down to just what I regualarly use, plus a few small emergency type items, like an extra spool of line. I don’t even have the ubiquitous milk crate in my yak anymore. I take two rods, a small tackle box, small cooler, paddle, and anchor pin. And that’s it. And I’ve never gone without anything I needed or even wanted.
I always enjoyed having my boats and being able to take friends with me, but now that the pontoon and jonboat are gone, most of my friends have gotten the yak bug, and I’m not the one footing the bill for everything anymore.
And, when you hook your first bull red out of a 'yak, boy oh boy, you’ll know you made the right move.
Here’s why I kayak fish

SnS,
Can’t give you a very objective view about your question. I have only fished from a friends power boat in the local area one time. It was ok. Seemed like we spent a lot of time moving around.
Sneaking up on a tailing Red in a Yak is an adventure.
I usually go out in my home waters and never paddle more than a mile or two. I have a bad shoulder and can’t paddle long distances. If I wanted to go a longer way, I would look at a Hobie kayak. They do get good reviews, but cost more.
Lot cheaper in the long run if you want to go out for an hour or two at time, when you have time.
Just my biased 2 cents.

good job with the camera… nice!
Stupid question but, for those of you that keep any of your catch while yak fishing, where do you keep them…on a stringer?
I’m mostly C&R, but I have a soft sided cooler that is always in my tankwell. It’s big enough for keeper trout, flounder, or a legal limit of slot reds

Sand n Suds,
Don’t know what type of boat you have. I had the same dilemna couple of years ago. My 18’ sea pro was collecting dust and making the boatyard rich with monthly storage. Just a pain to launch etc.
Sold boat. Used money to buy a kayak, canoe and a used 14’ jon boat and haven’t looked back.
Kayak and jon boat get used a ton. Jon boat is used when kayak spots are being over fished, to set crab traps and tow kids on tube. Plus it fits in garage and maintenance is hardly nothing. Also, no storage.
Plus wife loves the jon boat over the big boat. I can beach it any where and let the wife relax. She is asking about better jon boat, what a relief.
Kayak is great for the quick early morning or late evening solo trip. Agree with Too Busy’s sleigh ride. It is fun and even more fun if the hit is on a top water plug.

Once you go Yak, you’ll never go back!
Those who can’t fish, spend too much on seafood!
It’s amazing all the small, fishy looking spots you notice when paddling around in a yak that you don’t see when you’re flying by in a motor boat. no cleanup and maintenance of the yak is a huge plus as well
