Surge brakes on my Wesco trailer are not releasing when I am backing up. With the truck in reverse when i disconnect and reconnect the light plug I can hear the actuator clicking.
How do you troubleshoot this?
Only thing I did different this weekend was I had to back up into someones sandy yard up hill to park so I imagine I was putting some heavy pressure on that valve(however that works) while pushing my boat up in there. Maybe just a coincident?
leave your plug hooked up and have someone put the truck in reverse while you liston to or feel the actuator, if it clicks it’s working. May try cleaning the plug connector
Same thing happened to me with a Wesco trailer. Check the plug connected to your truck ( with a test light) first to see if the reverse part of the plug is getting power when the truck is in reverse. If so plug the trailer plug into the truck plug and check the wire behind both plugs. My guess is you have a bad plug either at the truck side or boat side.
“With the truck in reverse when i disconnect and reconnect the light plug I can hear the actuator clicking.” I did this by putting it in reverse (on flat ground) and applying the emerg brake. When I disconnect the plug and then reconnect it (the truck still in reverse so reverse lights are on) I hear a click.
This seems to imply to me the actuator is clicking, but my brakes are still applying in reverse.
Are these things expesive and a pain to replace. I suppose it connections are fine and it clicks in reverse then that is all there is left to do - replace it?
Remove it and spray some aerosol cleaner thru it, leave it hooked up to electrical and cycle it several times while spraying cleaner thru it, chances are good if it is clicking it has a blockage or buildup inside of it that is not allowing it to close completely.
I allways carry a 6" piece of 2x4 to wedge between the trailor coupling and the actuator assy. to deactivate the brakes when backing up just in case the solenoid fails.

It’s not the actuator that’s clicking it’s the “free backing solenoid”. They cost about $50.00.
There are two types, a “standard” type and a “bleed” type". The bleed type has an extra line that returns fluid to the master cylinder.
With the standard type, if the actuator is already compressed when you shift into reverse (say you’re heading down hill, stop, and then want to back up the hill), the brakes will remain engaged because there’s no way to relieve the pressure on the brake system. The bleed type is designed to eliminate this problem.
