Trailer Axle Repair - Bent Spindle

I managed to hit a curb so hard while pulling out of my neighborhood today that I bent the spindle on my trailer axle. One of my better stupid human tricks. Creased the rim on the tire as well.

Anyhow, I would like to find somebody that could straighten the spindle on the axle. Any suggestions of someone in the Charleston area? I don’t want to repalce the axle.

Thanks.

I would have to replace the axle if it was me! The spindle and the whole thing will have to be Trued to the axel or it will never pull right. I’m not sure anyone could even straighten it without taking the axle off the trailer. If you hit it hard enough to bend it you better be looking for more damage where the axle bolts to the frame. Just my way of looking at it! Keep us posted on the outcome!

I had the same concerns about whether the trailer would track correctly, and whether the spindle could be trued to the axle. I just replaced the leaf springs within the last month, so there are no problems replacing the axle - no rusted bolts to contend with.

You could probably replace it for less than you could fix it. You could do the work yourself. If you had it fixed you would have to take it to a machine shop to have it trued$$$$$$$$

Sammie, are you sure it didn’t just pop the axle back on the spring? A neighbor slammed his trailer into something and pushed the axle back about 1 1/2 to 2 inches on one side, You can look at his spring and see it. Of course I think it popped the post on the spring but you said your’s is practically new. measure from the front spring bolt down to the axle on both sides to be sure.

Nah, I pulled the hub and the spindle is about 20 degrees askew from the axle. I bent it good and proper. I couldn’t have been going 5 MPH when I hit that curb. Just lucky I guess.

Replace it - a bent axle that is bent back will break and ruin your day.

Fields Ornamental. They are fast, good, and reasonable. You don’t find that combination very often. They have done 2 different jobs for me and have exceeded what I expected both times. Ask for Steve. (843) 552-9432

Yup … Or Dickey Fields … they’re fast and good … if you live in that area!

Fields does great work!

Around N. Charleston I’ve had good service from Iron Knight Trailers.

David H.

I had Sonny at iron Knight build me a new axle. The axle I bent was 16 years old and I just replaced the leaf springs, so now I’ll have a new suspension.

The cost of the axle is the price of entertainment. Thanks to everybody for your input!

Take it to Tommy stone in mt p. If it will roll down the road. Often time you just replace the spindle or a wedge of steel shoved up there and a weld.

I say that if you are rolling a mile or so to the landing.

Pulling to key west?

Do it right.

I’ve heard a lot of good things about Tommy. I live in Goose Creek, so Iron Knight is a little closer, and I have had good experiences with Sonny in the past.

We’re lucky to have good trailer repair service in Charleston. I ran into a guy from Pawleys Island at Iron Knight yesterday that had to come all the way down here because there weren’t any places in his area.

I don’t think you can go wrong with any of these guys.

Broken trailers are a bummer - often a day ender.

Corbin’s right off of Park Circle does really good work.

I’d stay away from cross county road.
