Yesterday I noticed I have a broken trailer bunk. I figure I may as well replace all four since they are ten years old and I’ve gotten the goodie out of them. What material should I use? Some folks recommend cypress. What’s wrong with some pressure treated SYP? I think I can get some #1s at the lumber yard. Other than separating me from an extra hundred dollars,I see no difference other than possibly longivity. Anyone have opinions or preferences?
As long as you use 2.5 treated and wrap them really well with carpet/composites, you should have no problem. Regular
.40 treated will not stand up to saltwater for that long
I replaced mine recently. I used dried, pressure treated wood from Lowes. Even though I picked them carefully, theu still warped a bit. Once I put them on the trailer, however, the weight of the boat contoured them back into shape.
I used adhesive, Monel staples and West Marine bunk carpet. They turned out very nice.
Same as Sammie for me, exactly.

if you are going to keep the boat for a long time forget the carpet and just put some bunk slicks on. The wood will dry out faster. No carpet sponge holding water and launch and retrival will be much easier than carpet. I have slicks on the trailer for my Shearwater and for my 20 year old jon boat and will never go back to carpet. If you put slicks on remember do not take safety chain off until you are ready to launch or your boat may wind up on the ramp. They are called slicks for a reason. I got the ones for the shearwater out of florida and they cut them to fit my bunks (full 4" wide and in 3 pieces for length). The ones on the jon boat i bought from Boaters world years ago and they are great.
