Why are the lights grounded to the trailer and not run back to the vehicle? Any real problem skipping the trailer completely?

The lights are grounded to the trailer to save wiring. If you noticed, the plug has a wire (white) going to a lug or screw right in the tongue for the ground circuit.
You can run a ground from the plug to all the lights if you want to. If done correctly, it will help to alleviate some corrosion issues with grounding the lights to the frame. 9 times out of 10, that is where a light problem occurs anyway.

That’s why I ask. I’m soldering straight to the light using extension chord as the cable like I’ve read on here. I didn’t injure if done weird safety thing I didn’t recognize.

Thanks by the way.
