Trailer question

Hey guys - have a friend looking at a used boat, but the trailer looks to be a couple feet short. The bunks extend past the back of the frame about 2 ft as does the stern of the boat. Obviously with the weight of the outboard and everything it seems to be too much weight past the frame.

Is this typical? Can we just move the winch post forward a foot or so to compensate?

Thanks!

Thanks Greg –Bump

Take it to a professional trailer shop and have evaluated. Don’t trust people’s opinions on the internet, no offense to anyone.

I’ve seen lots of trailers set up the way you describe. Mine’s set up this way, and came from the factory like this-

It looks funny, maybe not an ideal setup, but it works fine, and 2’ past the frame really isn’t a whole lot. I wouldn’t move the boat forward on the trailer just yet because you might end up throwing the balance of the rig off. You want 10% of the total weight of the trailer+boat on the tongue. More than 10% puts unnecessary stress on the tow vehicle, and less than 10% puts your trailer at risk of “fish-tailing” which can be dangerous. If your friend ends up buying the boat, you can take it to a weigh station and check to see if its balanced pretty easily. That’s my internet opinion, but it’s my opinion in the physical world too
