Trailer questions

How difficult would it be to add hydraulic brakes to a single axle trailer? The coupler is bolted on,not welded.

Also, how would you go about determining the wheel location when converting a single axle to a double axle trailer?

Adding brakes is not very difficult at all. You can get a full kit (rotors, calipers, tubing and actuator) for $500-$600 from etrailer.com. I would highly recommend Kodiak over the others as they hold up better…much better than the Tie Down brakes!

Adding a second axle can be more difficult as you will need to move your current axle forward, buy all new springs & hardware unless you are dealing with a torsion axle and then you have to worry about overloading the trailer frame itself. If it were me, I would sell my current trailer and buy a tandem with brakes. The cost difference will likely be less than retrofitting your current trailer (if that’s what your plan is) PLUS you may get a newer trailer. There’s always one or two tandem aluminum trailers for sale on Craigslist.
