Trailer regs

We dont have to register kayak trailers here in SC correct? What about traveling thru other states what are the laws. Still debating on getting a trailer.

No registering trailers in SC, even enclosed trailers or boats. Don’t know about elsewhere. I do know if it is not registered it can be a pain to get it done.

Some other states require tags on trailers that are owned/used by their residents (another form of tax revenue) so if you are a South Carolinian just passing through, you should be okay…

I thought about this too - getting a trailer for my yak/gear and will be doing some traveling too

As far as I know, you dont have to worry about it because you live in SC. I have pulled trailers out of state before and had cops behind me, never been pulled. I was either ok doing it or just maybe lucky.

I’ve only gotten pulled in Alabama. Told them I was from SC, they got on the radio and I was on my way in less than 5 minutes.

Do Trailers Need to have a title in SC?

nope

And along the same line! If you have a truck with tags from NC pulling a trailor that you have a bill of sale for in SC, does the trailor need to be taged in NC also? This can get complicated! And suppose the boat on the trailor was registered in GA. We need a lawyer!

I went ahead and titled my trailer in SC. It was very inexpensive. Should take care of any headaches when traveling in the case I’m pulled over.

ADIDAF, after you titled your trailor, did you have to tag it?

No, not a requirement in SC

When I spoke with a lady at DMV she said if its 2000 pounds or under(empty trailer) you could go out of state with it and have no problems. My father in law got a permanent tag for his trailer said it was 80$ and he don’t have to mess with anything or pay anything more, just turn it back in if he ever moves out of state
