Trailer - repair or replace?

Couple of posts about trailer repairs here have got me thinking about mine… It’s in pretty bad shape, and I’ve been putting off doing anything about it for too long. It’s a tandem axle, aluminum frame, mostly galvanized other parts (“Performance” brand, don’t think they exist anymore but most of the components seem to be standard Tie Down Engineering stuff anyway) with torsion axles. Basically everything on the trailer could probably stand to be replaced other than the frame and maybe the lights, but definitely needs at least one new bunk, axles/spindles/hubs, brakes (long gone!), and probably tires. One of the fenders is tied on with bailing wire in the front - sweeet!

Yeah, I know, its a POS and I’m stupid for still using it… so is it going to be more cost effective to just buy a new (or good condition used?) trailer or repair the one I’ve got? (boat is 20’ and prob about 2600 lbs dry with motor) Any suggestions for repair shops and/or dealers? Thanks!

I was in the same fix a few years ago with mine.Everytime I went to wapoo, there would be a flyer on my truck when I got back in from a trailer repair shop…
I found a good used alum trailer on craigs list for $800.00.

Advertise yours for sale “as is” for $500 and take that money and what you would spend fixing yours (probably $1000) and buy you a newer one. People around here are always looking for a deal, even if it is a POS…no offense of course.

Also, my buddy had the same boat and it did well on a single axle which would save you some money.

thanks for the input… looks like I’ve got some shopping around to do.

Any tips on local dealers, used and/or new?

I would get quotes from several dealers if you plan to buy a new one, but like Capehorn said, Craigslist usually has a few on there…don’t forget to check other Craigslist cities too.
