When a trailer is titled and registered, like your car, truck, boat, motorcycle, outboard…whatever; you have to renew your registration at some point…Right? Also, in order to sell it, you need to transfer the title of ownership so that the new owner can register it and put tags on it. Without a title you will have a hard time selling a trailer.
Here, since we aren’t required to title or register trailers, anybody can swipe your trailer and put it under their boat or sell it to someone else in this state without any paperwork changing hands. For all you know the “like new” $2,000 trailer you just bought could be stolen property and you are now in possession of stolen goods. If found the authorities COULD charge you for the theft since there was no paper trail proving from whom you bought the trailer.
I can recall at least a dozen trailer thefts reported on this site alone in the past two years, but how many folks who post here have had cars stolen? And there are more automobiles than trailers I’m sure.
it wouldn’t matter if it had a title, if my trailer/truck fell apart i could simply go find one just like it, steal it and put my tags on it. the serial number is never checked for any reason until you sell it.
i’ve had a truck stolen recently, a street bike stolen and a car stolen twice.all were registered and had tags on them.
i’ve never had a boat or work trailer stolen.
