Trailer Tires

While doing some maintenance on my trailer today (while other lucky folks are fishing), I noticed that my tire sidewalls are cracked. These tires are only about 2 years old and while they are not top dollar tires, I kind of expected them to last more than 2 years. I started looking at tires today and had a couple of questions for you experts. Bear in mind, this is a 17’ CC that weighs about 1400 lbs with a 70 hp Yammaha.

  1. Bias or radial?
  2. Should trailer tires be balanced?
  3. Is a C load rating sufficient for my application?
  4. Any specific tire (brand) recommendation?

Thanks

I prefer bias tires and don’t balance them as I only make short trips with my trailers and they usually last 5-6 years anyway. However, for frequent long trips, I would go with radials and have them balanced. Load Range C should be sufficient. See what the weight rating is on the current tire.

I’ve had decent luck with Carlisle tires, but I’ve also had a new one blow out on me. Some folks like the Goodyear Marathon, but you are paying for the name. I would check with some local suppliers and see what they have and for how much $$.

I have the same issue but mine lasted three years. The best deal I’ve found was online at etrailer.com. They have free shipping on anything over $150.

whatever you get, get them balanced
