Trailer Tires

205/75 14, 5 lug. Galv.

I do take her on the interstate frequently.
Is there truly a ‘high speed’ tire? Is it necessary?
Tire and rim or just tire?
Anyone replaced theirs lately?

I put in thousands of interstate miles with a heavy utility trailer in heat ice salt snow - I have 2 years on a set of cheap Harbor Freight tires - and the tread still looks great… Make sure your axle is straight (not bent) and the same distance from the receiver on each side…

Good advice to check! I had the hubs replaced last year by Charleston Trailer (can’t remember if they sold tires/rims)so I feel like they are put on straight and correctly spaced, or at least within tolerance. I will double check myself with the news ones once purchased. There was a guy on a post about a month ago saying he sold tires and had good deals, I was hoping he would chime in here soon too! If not I reckon I’ll just check Harbor and Northern Tool and see what they have to offer. Thanks.

Hey Stump. Charleston Trailer sells tire/rim combinations. I would also pick up a spare hub and mount that with your spare tire.

No need to replace rim if it’s in good shape. I sell tires (not trailer tires) and I would not run bias ply tires on the interstate. They tind to separate after awhile when running at high speeds and hot temps. Get a decent radial and you will be fine. Also remember the most important tire you have is your spare. Most people carry a spare that is flat because they never check the air in it.

The last time I pricee them out it was cheaper to buy tires already mounted on rims than paying to have tires dis mounted and remounted plus disposal fee and stems. Also you have to watch, galvanized rims are bad about rusting from the inside out. Most of the time you cannot see the rust because it is in the inside of the rim under the tire.

I’m currently converting a boat trailer into a kayak trailer. I wanted to put bigger wheels/tires on and found this place. Good prices and free shipping. I went with bias ply as I will be carrying very little weight but, I run radials on my boat trailer and always will.

Ditto on the spare hub if you’re traveling very far.

Radial car/truck tires and never look back.

Geralds replaced my tires on my trailer cheeper that buying new rims and tires !! Just call them a day in advance so they can order them !!
I think it was around $30.00 - $40.00 installed each !!!

Daaaang! That’s a pretty good price for just tires! Ended up going to Charleston Trailer, 2 new tires and rims, taxes fees and installed out the door, just over 300. They also helped my change one of my better tires for the POS bias tire that was my spare. Now I’m on the road with confidence!

I just found a pair of ST205/75R15 mounted on alloy rims on eBay for $184.95 with free shipping. I am skeptical as hell but we’ll see what they look like upon arrival. Seller seems reputable so I rolled the dice.

I don’t like the black on there as I am sure it’s liable to flake off in short order but I’ll put some wax on them and hope for the best.

I’ll post updates when they arrive if anyone is interested.

I bought 205/75/15 aluminum rims with radial tires at Wesco last year for $100 each. They had a stack of them they bought for a customer that never got them. Might be worth a call.

sorry to derail, but has anyone ever had a problem with a slow leak on tires mounted to the fancy wheels like above . I have an issue on one wheel that just wont go away.

I have traded tires from one rim to another, put on new tires, replaced stems, and even had the inside of the wheel sanded to remove a small bit of corrosion. Even tried fix a flat, thinking that it would help the seal. And nobody I have talked to uses or recommends tubes.

Am I resigned to pump a tire up ever 2 weeks? any ideas?
thanks !

Maybe over inflate the tire a little to like 50lbs and make you a soapy solution in a squirt bottle. Spray all over tire until you see bubbles and narrow it down from there… Also, be careful using fix a flat, I hope you put it in a drove the trailer around to spin the stuff all around the inside of the tire as evenly as possible. That stuff will settle in one place and make your tire seriously out of balance. Lets us know what you find out!

I have read that some aluminum rims seep air through the actual aluminum.
My solution would be to buy a new rim.
I am fighting one on the wifes car right now. Losses .5-1 psi per week.
Dealer and 2 tire shops cant find the leak, leaked before and after new tires.

Got that problem on my wife’s Esculade, Dang 22" wheels

You can skimp on a lot of things but tires, I would not…when your on the highway, the last thing you want to see is the sparks and smoke coming from one side of your trailor. Not saying I know everything, but as someone who works construction dragging my trailors up and down I85…I run any brand, but always heavy sidewall (load range E)…JMO…Jim
