Trailer Tires

Need to replace my trailer tires. Where do you guys recommend for buying locally?

Are they aluminum or galvanized rims? If they are galvanized I would recommend just buying a complete tire rim combo from Hankle or Charleston Marine. By the time you pay for mounting and new valve stem‘s you’re pretty close to the cost of the combo and I have seen galvanized rims rust from the inside out so for a very small amount of additional money you know you have the security of a brand new rim. If they are aluminum rims then I would check with Gerald‘s or Williams Tire. Make sure you are comparing apples to apples on cost, if you do any long hauls or highway travel you want to go with a true radial. Lots of cheap bias tires out there that are advertised heavily.

Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated!

What’s the difference on the true radial tires? What does that but you?

I replaced my trailer tires last fall. Turns out I had the wrong spec and I was running then under inflated. One looked like it was ready to shred after 4 hours on the interstate. Dodged a big bullet there. I’ll have to check to see if they’re radials but I was in a dire situation when I bought them.

The Goodyear Marathon is the best trailer tire available.

Definitely want radials. Charleston Trailer and West marine had the best prices I could find.

I have been running Carlisle Radial Trail HDs the last few years. Between trips to the Keys and the Florida left coast, never had any issues with them. Running tires under-inflated is terrible and greatly increases your chances of having a catastrophic tire failure.

You also need to know the speed that your trailer tire is rated for. I found out that most trailer tires are only rated for 55 mph. The 8 ply tires that I bought are rated for 80 mph.

GoodYear Endurance ST tires are made in USA and rated for freeway speeds (87mph).
Dont tow at those type of speeds but the rating means it’s able to shed the heat.

I’m currently running 3 year old Goodyear Marathons. They will be replaced with Endurance in a few years.

Other option is to go Small Truck radials with the proper load rating.

Depending on size and weight load.maxxis makes a 10 ply 15 inch

Replaced mine last year and West Marine was double the online price.

Last time I got trailer tires, about 3 years ago, I got aluminum rims with tire cheaper than the tires at Wesco Trailers. $100 for nice aluminum rims with radials.

Are you going to pay double to buy local?

And FYI, West Marine is out of Cali.

Are you going to read the original post before you reply? He asked for local…

And FYI, Auto Zone is out of Tennessee.

1st make sure you buy trailer rated tires.
2nd there are different ratings, so understand the weight and speed ratings. Know your load and Check the Google for the tire rating charts charts.

If you are towing long distances a non-trailer rated tire will be more likely to blow out the sidewall because of the heat generated by the load and flexing of the sidewalls (no shocks or suspension to soften the bouncing). Many, many threads on this on the world wide web. If you’re hauling local, then regular tires will be just fine…

Update - My Amazon tires performed well to the Keys and back in April -

proper inflation is also key to the life of the tire.

You can choose to “upgrade” the rating of your tires for speed and weight if you haul long distances especially if you are close to maximum rating for the tire you currently have.

Online tire and rim combo is by far cheaper than local which is unfortunate, but true. Amazon is a good source if you have a Prime account. Other than cheap imports there are only a few real trailer tire manufacturers out there.

Thanks for the info!

All I can say about these tires is they are four years old and have made two trips to Key west running seventy MPH at night.

Good luck!

Got mine at west marine with rims. Had them do a price match with one of the online stores & saved about 1/2 price per tire. They’ll tell you at WM that prices are high due to being based out of cali & thats why they price match.
