Trailer WINCH, STRAP, And HOOK

This is the first time I have posted pictures to a new thread, so let me know if you do not see.

Decided to pull the boat out of the water. First time it has been pulled out in a while. The boat is always on the lift.

  1. first problem = the hook broke off of the strap
  • the strap is about 3 years old
  • I assume it just rotted and broke
  • I have always used the strap style. Anyone use the CABLE style on your winch and do you recommend?

SO,i figure it would be about a $20 fix with a new strap and hook.
When i unravel the strap off the winch…

  1. second problem = where the strap is anchored to the the winch = the bolt running across the winch is bent.
  • anyone ever see this before?
  • how could this happen?
  • what would be the best way to remove and replace?
  • what is the best type of bolt to replace with to avoid same issue in the future?

Any and all advice would be much appreciated.

go to west marine and buy a whole new winch and strap would be your best bet instead of fighting and cussing over it

If the side of your winch spool are solid, then it appears your winch is generally sound. Hack saw the old bolt. Take it to Charleston Hardware or similar and buy a new one. Go to West Marine or similar and buy an new strap/hook. You could get a new bolt as West Marine. You’ll just pay a premium. Reassemble.

I’ve always used straps. 'Seems like a strap will do less damage when it parts than a cable will. A parting cable will do real damage to any flesh it finds upon parting.

The strap replacement chore is pretty quick and not expensive.

Just my opinion.

I use a cable on my winch. I added the winch and stand to my boat after I got tired of dealing with the bar on the Float On trailer. I got a heavy duty winch rated for I think 15,000lbs or something like that, it was the biggest that I could find and a 2 speed gearing. I unhook it from the boat every spring and unwind it to check the cable, no problems so far and its been on the trailer for about 5 years now. When I do replace it, I’ll just buy a cable rated at the same lb but the next one will be coated. I wanted the cable because my old battlewagon is heavy and I was tired of hook-up problems.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Changed mine the other day and new bolt came with the new strap. I did have to use a hacksaw and cut it to length.

I’m so excited I can barely cope,
I sizzlin’ like an isotope.

I would just replace the strap, all that stuff that is rusted is going to be rusted on a new one in a couple years.

Protect the strap end from UV damage and the hook will stay on longer …

I just replaced mine a couple days before I destroyed the boat. My bolt was bent pretty badly also, but it still came right out after I unbolted it. I put the same bolt back on the winch and it worked with no problem. I prefer straps over cable for two reasons. 1-You don’t have to worry about the cable slivering off and cutting your hand. 2-The cable has a tendency to bind into itself on the reel under lot’s of pressure.

Not to hijack this thread, but I missed this somewhere along the way. Hanapaa, what happened to the Fountain?

Get a new winch and use cable.I had mine break as well.Last 3 years no problem and cable is like new.
