Transducer Mounting Advice

Anyone had the experience of mounting a fish finder transducer on a Jackson Big Tuna?

Talk to “DDOlson” - he’s got a Tuna…

I mounted one on a cuda. I attached the transducer mount to a small piece of PVC. I ran it through a scupper hole so it is mounted flush with the hull and isnt exposed to additional oyster rash. Then I held it in place with a piece of High density foam. Over a year later, it’s still holding strong. Your welcome to take a look at how I rigged it at the meet & fish on Sunday

Thanks JP. Did you then run the transducer cable inside hull or on the deck?

I hope he chimes in. I like the idea of a shoot-thru transducer, but the Big Tuna doesn’t have many in-hull flat locations that are easily accessible.

I ran it through the side of the center console, just above the deck level so water coming in wouldnt be an issue. I used gasket material to seal the hole and used a clamshell plate to protect it. I store the battery in the hull and not in the console. For that, I converted a dry box into a battery box. I haven’t had any issues with leaks or water getting to the battery. I’m happy with the install so far.

This is the best picture I have. The foam has worked it’s way up above the deck a little bit over the past year. But it’s still solid and doesnt get in my way.

Check out Yak Attack’s new All in One box with the drop down transducer arm I believe there is even a picture of a Jackson already rigged it on his facebook page.

?? does any other kayak co offer a molded in transducer mount??

To install a fish finder & transducer on the Big Tuna you can take two approaches. One is to use the suggestion provided by Lost@Sea. I have looked at the battery box by YakAttack and there appears to be no way of keeping any paddle spray or wave action that hits the kayak appears that the battery terminals will come in contact with water.

To install the system without the yakattack solution you will need to drill two holes for where the cables go into the Big Tuna. My transducer is mounted in one of the front scrupper holes, the cable enters the kayak near the transducer and comes out just under the seat where it is positioned in the solo configuration. In order to get the cable to exit at this point, you will need to drop a string with a weight attached. Pickup the rear of the kayak so that the weight and string travel to the front hatch. Reach into the hatch opening and pull the weight and string out. Attach the string to the transducer cable and pull the cable to the exit hole. With a little work you will get connector through the hole located in the gunnel of the kayak.

You will need to add about 3 feet of electrical wire to the wires that will contact to the battery. As the battery is stored in the rear hatch of the Big Tuna.

I hope that this helps…If not shoot me a PM and we can meet up to talk and install your FF in the Big Tuna.

Yes. Wilderness Systems, Hobie, and Native. I’m sure others do as well.

Thanks DDOlson.

Did you fabricate or purchase mounting hardware to install the transducer in the scupper?

That looks really cool. I was thinking of something similar like a pelican case w/ the FF mounted to it.

I purchased the Lowrance model…LGB has a design for DIY.

Check out http://www.yakangler.com/ there are several DIY plans from other Jackson owners on their installation of a FF.

Dave - Hobie has been offering pre-molded transducer mounts for a couple of years now. They first came out with the introduction of the Pro Angler 12 and also come pre-drilled for wiring. I believe that they are now standard in 5 models. I believe all of the major companies now offer this feature in some form or another.

Oops??. I didn’t see your response Dolphin.
