I’m having to replace my transducer and want to mount it on a piece of starboard. I know someone here did it recently but couldn’t find the thread. I have a couple of questions:
How thick of a piece of starboard, 1/2" or 3/4"?
I know 5200 was used. How did you hold/clamp it to the transom
tight enough to get it to bond?
Anything else I need to know/consider? I dread getting the cable from the stern back up into the console.
Also, what is the best method to fill in old screw holes on the transom? I had a speed wheel on the opposite side I no longer need and want to remove it.
Not sure but don’t see any downside to using the 3/4"
I would consider scoring the gel coat and starboard before applying the 5200.
Does the speed wheel have a cable attached still? You could use it to pull the transducer cable through. You could also use any other existing cable that runs from the console to the transom. Tie the cable to 100lb mono and pull the mono through. Then attach the new transducer to the mono and old cable and pull back to the console. Using a silicone gel/lube seems to work well and you don’t have to worry about it rotting the coating on the cable.
Filling the old screw holes is easy with some 5200 if you’re not concerned with appearances but make sure you really pack it in and allow enough time for it to cure.
quote:5200 will not bond starboard to your transom.
That is what I had always heard but I could swear that someone on here said they recently mounted a piece of starboard using just 5200. Maybe I’m losing my mind. Not sure what purpose the starboard serves if it has to be screwed into the transom. Might as well mount the transducer straight to the transom.
“Apathy is the Glove into Which Evil Slips It’s Hand”, but really, who cares?

There’s currently a 4x4" piece of 1/2" starboard on my transom that I stuck there a few months ago with 4200. Didn’t even use 5200. Didn’t scuff the boat, just cleaned with acetone and stuck it there. used a piece of tape to keep it from sliding down, and it’s still there.
The purpose of screwing it to the boat is to make it so you can move your ducer around if you need to without violating the boat.
For instance, from my initial mounting position, I had to come down about 5/8" to make it read at speed. If I had screwed ducer to transom, that would have been two wasted screw holes…
YES, you can bond starboard to stuff with 4200 or 5200. Works even better if you “flame” the starboard so I’ve read.
