Transducer opinions?

I am installing a new Simrad and originally chose the Total Scan Transducer, this will be for 95% inshore and maybe out to the jetties, very little offshore.

However, the installer informed me there will be to much cavitation for that transducer to funciton properly. He said the side scan will work but would need a through hull transducer also.

Looking for opinions, before making any further decisions. Thank you.

Sounds like an upsell, just like most on FB told you. There are tens of thousands of small to large vessels running the total scan with no issues. Stick a piece of starboard to the hull with something and test it. But I would say that your biggest worry with that one will be its length. In the shallows it WILL get kicked up and/or damaged if you fish hard.

Google sticking it to the inside of your hull, lots of people do that and it works with varying success based on the construction of your hull.

I have a through hull TD for my Simrad, the Total Scan will only really work at slower speeds. I plan to add the TS for looking at bottom when going slow, the through hull reads bottom at 50+ mph.

I just installed a Simrad GO7/Totalscan transducer on a Pathfinder 2000V. No issues with tracking bottom and staying clear. In fact, I have never had a transom mounted transducer that worked so well.

I would ask the installer specifically why there would be too much “cavitation” (wrong term by the way, should be aeration). Unless there is water pickups or some other feature on the hull in front of where the transducer can be mounted that could disrupt flow and cause aeration at speed, you should not have any issues.
