I moved to PA and I was going to bring my boat back with me. Problem is PA requires a title and registration for trailers. They will not issue a title on a manufactured trailer, they will only transfer. Is there any way to get a title for a trailer in SC so I can transfer it.
Do you have a Bill of Sale, from the dealer with all the numbers on it?
That’s all you need to get the title!
The SC DMV can issue a title for a trailer. You can contact them for what you will need to have. Good luck…
If trailer has changed hands more than once,( multible ) owners, I think you will need to provide transfer receipts from each owner.
It can be a real pain in the arse!!! Good luck.

I’m not sure what to do. Might have to buy a junk trailer and use the title, but I’m not sure the legality of that. This was the SC DMV’s response to the question:
Not unless you bought it new, and have all of the original paperwork. If you do, then you can title and register it with the form 400.

It would be illegal.
I moved to SC from MD with a boat and trailer and I’m pretty sure they issued me a title because I needed tags to get the boat from MD to SC.
I’m sure the right person at the SCDMV will know how to solve the problem. It might take a couple tries.

FYI - to get a tag for my trailer, I had to get it titled in SC first ($15) then get a tag ($75), total $90. Also, make sure you take a Certificate of Origin with you if it’s new. If you aren’t leaving SC with it, don’t bother but keep that paperwork! I’d hate to try to get it done without the original bill of sale or Certificate.
Turns out I can not get a certificate of origin because the trailer company went out of business. I talked to a PA notary/title person. Since I am putting two new axle assemblies on the trailer and new tires they will consider it a rebuilt/homemade trailer. I will have to get it inspected and then they will give me a title. I just have to make sure there are not any identifying marks from the original manufacturer. Sounds kind of shady and an easy way to sell a stolen trailer, but it’s legit.
