transmission woes

I have had some issues getting into and out of gear which were attributed to the idle being too high recently. Now, I took the boat out today and it only operates in REVERSE. If I put the boat in “forward” it goes backwards. If I put in reverse, it goes backwards as usual, and if I put into ‘neutral’ it goes backwards as well. It’s a 1998 Mariner 150 carb. Am I screwed?

Sounds like it is ‘stuck’ in reverse…Check all of the shifter connections and armatures for correct function first. You may need someone to shift it while you look. If you do not find anything obvious, may have an issue in the lower unit. Most likely, though, something is stuck or has slipped/is loose in the shifter linkage assy.

check linkages and shifter cable. it may need an adjustment if over time it has slipped a little or the stop has worked loose.

If you ain’t retie’n, you aint try’n…

Great advice. I looked yesterday and found that the shift cable had slipped off of the housing that holds it in place. I had a friend move it back and put it back in place. Good to go. Thanks!

Good Job on the fix’n Kiblerws
