A fox pen is a large track of fenced land, usually something between 200 and 1,000 acres, with a high fence buried a foot or 2 underground so they can’t dig out. The pens are stocked with fox and coyotes and used mostly for competition hound hunts and puppy training, or just entertainment and excercise for the dogs. The pen managers build “hides” that the fox and yotes can get into, to escape the hounds. No fox or yotes are killed on the hunts, cost too much to stock the pens.
The stocked game is well cared for, fed and watered. The only escapees happen when a tree falls on the fence, therefore they have to be checked every day.

Thanks Larry. What Larry said. Some pens aren’t’ so large, but the same principle. Pokesalad still sounds a lot like Bolbie.
I agree Fred they are rare to come by. If she uses her head right she will be very safe.
Do you think the coyotes can run for a longer distance than the red. I was told the reds are faster. Not really sure?_
No doubt the coyote will run longer than any fox. Even on a good run pen that only lets dog packs run a short while sooner or later you’ll have to replace your foxes do to mortality. With coyotes (disclaimer, what I have found/observed.) they will run as a group and split up, confusing the hounds. Often several yots will sneak behind the pack while one stays ahead. If a stray hound gets too far ahead of the pack yots can and will attack the hound. (I’ve got video of this)
I used to hate coyotes in fox pens for fear that some could escape. But in the bigger picture we may need more pens so more incentive is put into trapping wild coyotes. Trust me Coyotes do not get a chance to breed in pens as they do in the wild.
What is this fox penning? Googled and all I find is humane society hysteria
Fox pens are large fenced areas that houndsmen release hounds to chase foxes or coyotes. Most of those guys just sit around eating enormous ammounts of pork skins and Vienna sausages all night, while listening to their dogs "run".
These same pens are mostly to blame for the coyote problem,as the hounds usually cant catch the coyote, and they end up digging out underneath the fence.Watch out for your kitty cat if it lives outside.
So you have Scientific evidence of this? I wonder if coyotes eat cormorants?
You sound pretty bitter, you don’t like Viennas? Scientific evidence doesn’t allow for bitterness.
show us your scientific evidence that these pens are to blame for our coyote problem. You sure put a lot of faith in science, let’s put your faith to the test.
You sound a bit two sided poke:wink: Did you vote for obuma?
When these pens are built and maintained properly they stay inside the pen. If someone leaves the gate open or the fence is damaged by a storm etc they can go for a sprawl.
If you look closely at the construction of various pens you will see they are not all created equally. If its not made entirely of metal and plastic any porous materials (wood) will need to be covered with flashing or they can climb out. And don’t forget about the bottom apron!
