may be a stupid question but how does this happen, trash in the fuel tank? My motor ran funny yesterday, when I looked in the bottom of the gas tank(portable 5 gallon)it had a ton of black stuff in the bottom of it. It was new 93 octane gas. Motor ran good after I switched out tanks. I assume it was in the gas when I bought it or a bad tank.
Gas has a lot of stuff in it from the pumps, I mean a LOT from time to time. Also, ALL tanks can degrade over time, no matter the material (Plastic, steel, alum…)
Funny you should ask that. After having all 3 carbs torn down, cleaned and put back together AND, having it run great in the driveway, I pulled it down to Charlie Town last Friday nite only to have it run like crap. Took it back to the shop where they found “crap” in the gas and the carbs fouled up again. I have a 10 micron filter system on and now have no confidence in it. They are now in the process of draining the tank to clean it out, have already torn the carbs down again and hope starting with a newly cleaned system not to have any further problems. Never had any problems until late this Summer. It is demoralizing and expensive.
On my jon boat I have the small gas tank (6 gals.). I look into it often and try to see if I can see to the bottom. The gas is usually clear enough to see the bottom. If there is any doubt, it all gets dumped out and I start fresh. Boat motors aren’t cheap. Getting rid of a couple gallons of questionable gas is pretty good insurance, I think. I probably start over with an empty tank 5 times a year. You might be able to find one of those funnels with the build in filter or just use a paper towel in a funnel and fill your tank from a plastic gas jug. You HAVE to keep the crap out of the gas. It’s in there!

10 micron works well but the fuel line between the filter and engine can also come apart from the inside leaving crap in the carbs. Try replacing the fuel line.
Even parts of gas caps degrade and drop crap into the fuel. It’s hard to name all the causes/contributors I’ve seen causing trouble, on top of all the ETOH etc…
That is a good source I am sure but, my fuel lines from the tank to the filter and filter to motor were replaced when I put the filter system on in July.
I think I have the same problem! new fuel tanks 4 yrs ago and one side I get a black sediment on the internal Raycor elements.but not on the port side just the starboard. Raycor comes out black just on that side. My thought is fuel line breaking down ? Where can I get a custom hose made?? 300 hp cat dsl.

The black gunk will grow in a diesel tank and doesn't have anything to do with the hose. You should add a diesel fuel additive with a biocide every time you fuel up and it will keep that crap to a minimum.
