Travel Case

My son will be travelling, by air, to New Mexico for several weeks. He wants to take his fly rod and continue to work on his casting and such. Do any of you have an extra fly rod case that you want to get rid of? He flies out Saturday, and if need be I can go buy a new one if I can find one. Thanks in advance?

I made a cheap one out of PVC pipe and two end caps. Isn’t terribly pretty, but it does the job and is MUCH cheaper than the travel cases you’ll buy from a tackle shop.

Did you line the PVC with anything or does the rod just kinda bang around in it? Luggage handlers can be unfriendly to luggage at times.

Cut a towel up so that you can roll the rods in the towel and still get them/it in the PVC.

Ditto… I made two PVC cases for my rods, they have a rod sock, and I put a sponge in the cap on both ends, but I NEVER check a rod. That’s asking for trouble…

Pillage and plunder with a 9wt and a fist full of clousers.

Make a 2,3, or 4 pocket rod sleeve from some of the $1/yd fabric at WalMart.
All you need is $1 worth of material and 5 minutes with a sewing machine.

Slip rod pieces into the sleeve and sleeve into the PVC tube. My old one had one end with a basic glued on cap , the other end was a screw in plug and a glued on fitting.

Total cost was about 5 bucks.

Thanks for all of your input gentlemen. I guess I’m going to Home Depot after work.

I found one at Walmart in Pennsylvania when i was up there. I haven’t seen any in the charleston area but i bet if you went to walmart.com you could probably find it. Its just under $20, has a built in reel pouch… I clip it on my backpack when i travel for work and its worked really well.

I would but he flies out Saturday. Not much time to wait for one to come in.

Here’s a good step by step how to. Everyting but the fabric sleeve.

We built the case and painted it in that textured paint (camo). It came out awesome! Thanks for the tip guys.

Pics are coming as soon as I can figure out how to upload them onto the site. Final cost with paint was $58. More expensive than I could have bought one for, but he will have a cool rod case that he and dad built.

goodlooking do it ya self…like the paint.

Keep casting.

Thanks. We used that textured stuff and painted it a camo pattern. Came out pretty cool looking. Got his fly-rod to New Mexico just fine. Thanks to Too Busy for the go-by link.

I would highly recommend not using PVC. It is the cheapest way to go but I went to Belize 4 years ago and put 3 of my spinning rods in pvc with socks wrapped around the inside and when I got to baggage claim they informed me that the PVC was in 100 pieces. The rods made it but getting back into the US with 7’ single piece rods was tough. Go on Ebay and you can buy a orvis or knock off 2 piece fly rod travel case. They cost no more than $100. It’s not worth going on a trip and then finding out that your not able to use your rods b/c you took the cheap way out.
Protect your investment!

I have a 2 rod holder case by orvis, but it is for a 4 piece rod. The picture looks like his might be a 2 piece. I don’t need it for the next couple of months. If he can use a 4 piece case he can borrow it from me as long as he returns it.
