Travel Rods

Going to be traveling out west, Wyoming, Montana, etc. Instead of renting gear, I have the idea of buying some travel set-ups that will pack in standard luggage and/or backpacks. Does anyone have any experience or recommendations? When looking on-line, I see mixed ■■■■■■■■. Just don’t want to buy crappy gear. Thanks for any info!

L.l. Bean has very good travel rods. I have fished with their five piece fly rods and three piece spinning rods. They will pack in a large suite case and have good action, I also have three piece spinning “Ugly Sticks” that will pack. All have good action. Bass Pro has travel rods on the web.

This link will give you a some info on different travel rod specs. https://www.fieldandstream.com/10-travel-rods-for-every-fishing-vacation#page-6

Not sure if you are fly fishing or using a spinning rod, but there is good quality 3 and 4 piece rods you can buy that will fit in your luggage.

I take my own gear to the Abacos every year and I’ve been doing this for a long time. I made a case for the rods from PVC pipe at the hardware store with two end caps and I put all the rods, lures, hooks, and anything sharp in the PVC case that must be checked and carry on the reels in my carry on suit case. Super easy and never a problem.

I bought cheapo two piece rods that are my “travel rods” that I could care less if they get banged up and I carry on my nice Penn reels.

I do as jtm with the pipe but I also use pipe insulation on the ends! Have had a few tip guides broken on flights to Coats Rica. Pack your reels in carry on!

thanks for all of the replies! I’m looking for something I can pack in a checked suitcase. Looks like Daiwa makes an executive travel kit. I’m mainly thinking spinnning, but that kit also converts to a short fly rod, which could be interesting. Thanks again everybody!

I bought a wright and mcgill (eagle claw) 4 piece travel rod at dicks for 60 or 70 bucks about 4 years ago. Since then it’s caught jacks in Mexico, trout in North Carolina and Redfish here. I pair it with a 4000 Penn battle in salt or a Pflueger president when trout fishing. Its a good little rod.
