I’ve seen people on YouTube do this, especially fishing for jacks. I’m targeting them tomorrow, and just wanted to know if anyone has tried single hooks instead of trebles and had a better hook up ratio. i’ve already bought some, so Ill keep y’all updated when I experiment this weekend
I replace all my tops with j hooks with rings. I’m sure the hook up ratio is slightly less but safer for us and safer for the fish we release—especially juvenile trout.
I’ve seen videos showing pelagics striking a trolled lure. They bite & bite until they get hooked . I’ve seen so many treble hooks in hands - I much prefer single sharp j hooks - with a spro swivel between the split ring and the lure. The swivel will greatly increase the hook up ratio
If using inshore plugs, Leave the hooks on as they are in the package. Upgrade to sharper trebles like VMC, Owner, etc. as needed. Changing to j hooks changes the balance/action of the plug. Plus you will have less hookups. And definitely do not add swivels and split rings if they don’t come with it If the designers of the bait felt like it was needed, they would have put them onl. No need to complicate things
