We made the call that we would fish on Sunday early in the week. In a rare combination of getting lucky, the weather man being spot on and accurately predicting the weather we were met with one of the most beautiful days offshore you can get. Met at the dock at 4 and decided to wait till 4:30 to leave so we could gaze at the stars… or wait for a crew member. Either way you look at it at 4:30 we were on the way. It was the kind of morning like a typical day at Atlantas airport. Line the planes up so they can take off. That is how it was to the end of the jetties… a long line of boats. It was the kind of morning where you dont even need radar.
We rode out towards the banks. After we witnessed a beautiful sunrise on an amazing ocean:
We put out the high speed troll spread for some wahoo for the last 8ish miles to the Mahi zone.
Well after about 7 miles on the high speed with no action we see something out in the distance?..looks like a pelican the Capt calls out. Strange to have a pelican way out here. We get close and like a beacon in the night the sun beaming down we see a tree. The tree of life.
We put out the spread and make the first pass. FISH ON!
First Mahi of the 2014 season in the boat!
Capt. puts us back on the tree and it’s a straight up fire drill.
And they start coming over the rail…
We stayed until the tree drifted into the weed line. The Mahi must have scattered after that but for 2 hours we pulled Mahi after Mahi off t
I really think I fished that same tree only later in the day when it was in that weed line. I found plenty of dolphin under it and they were pretty spooked by the time I got to them. We pulled a handful of them off of it but it was hard work and that’s when we pushed out deeper and got into them thick. Did you see the lone triple tail on it? If we had a float line gun onboard we would have dove in and shot some dolphin and taken lots of cool video.
That would have been awesome. We did not se the triple tail. Word on the dock was deep is where they were at so based on the reports we did pretty well for the area we fished. Have to try deeper next time.
Wonder if you put a rope on that tree and pulled it away from the weed line, would the bite not have slowed down? Nice day! Did you get a weight on the Hoo? Nice fish.
We were not on my boat that day we were on a Fountain Jet setter. Based on some of the other reports we may have done better to just back up to the tree and pitch baits lol. I think towing it back out of the weed line would have worked out. We had it for about 4 miles before it hit the weed line.
bwilliams; I’ve never done that, pulling a tree like that! I was just wondering, if it would have worked! If I ever run into a situation like that, I’m going to give it a try. Who knows, might work
We dident weigh it. Internet weight is a solid 80+ Lol. No one had a big enough scale at the marina. Still get jazzed thinking about that reel just screaming.

I can’t say for sure how much the fish weighs, but the picture of it I printed out weighs 12 pounds.
Thanks for taking the time to upload all the awesome photos and narrate it, a great read!
