Tree rats beware - youngens on the prowl

Afternoon hunt was scheduled today with my two girls in hopes of letting the sharp shooter draw blood with the new scope installed and zeroed in on her squirrel taming .22 After getting set up around 3:30 things were looking promising until some fellow felt that he needed to do some pistol practice a few hundred yards from us…this kept the squirrels from coming out to feed until 5:15. We saw 7 that had a problem sitting still long enough to be shot at and finally one froze way up the top of the tallest pine tree 50 yards sway and 130 foot up. All that could be seen was the head. My sniper gave it her best shot and blew bark up instead of brains just a quarter inch too low. We all were shivering at this time and that is what kept the tree rat safe for now. Can’t wait to get back out to let her do it again!

The smiles say they had a good time. Love seeing kids in the woods, especially girls. Taking my Daughter tomorrow hunting from a canoe, to sneak up on some Squirrels.

Well stilhunr it appears that we got the land covered and you and your daughter have the water approach covered. Hope she nails a couple 8)

No luck this morning. Fog then windy. Did have a big Doe walk within 30 yards of us while we were sitting on the ground. Stalked a Raccoon that was laying on a Oak limb. He went into a hollow and turned around and stuck out just his head while she was lining up a shot, he never came back out far enough that he wouldn’t drop out of the tree. Only seen 1 Squirrel and heard 2 others.

She still had a good time…

Reminds me of me and my Dad floating the Edisto with a pair of .410 870’s with full chokes. Those things were deadly on a tree rat with high brass #6’s. We killed a many a tree rat and shared many hours together. Maybe it’s time to get my oldest daughter in the boat at Zig Zag landing.

This post brings back many great memories for me. In a place I used to hunt in MD, there was a big old oak tree that had a hollow about 30 feet off the ground, and there always seemed to be a Raccoon in there. I saw him many times glaring out at me, but he’d always duck back inside. I spent many hours sitting & keeping watch in hope that coon would come out far enough so I could get a shot at him, but never did. I killed a lot of Squirrels in those woods too!

I have 2 brothers & 2 sisters, and only my dad, myself & my one brother hunted. I’m the oldest, so I got to spend more time with my dad hunting & fishing than my brother did. I still have my first gun, which my parents gave me for Christmas when I was 13, a bolt action Mossberg .410.

For many years we had a tradition of hunting squirrels on Thanksgiving morning. Dad worked a lot & that day he always had off, so we would hunt together. He had a stroke at age 50, and although he recovered pretty well, and we hunted together a few more years afterwards, it wasn’t the same & he eventually couldn’t do it any longer.

I have 3 sons & a daughter and only my middle son, who lives in Charleston, ever showed any interest in hunting. They all would fish, but not hunt. I really miss hunting, so would like to get back into it & spend time with my son hunting some Squirrels. I had given my middle son that .410, but when he went in the Navy, I held on to it. We haven’t hunted together in many years & he’s never killed anything with it. It’s time to change that!

I’ve spent most of the last 25 years driving a tractor trailer, which took me away from home a lot & away from a lot of things with my kids.

They grow up fast & life seems to go by so quickly. Enjoy it while you can and as much as you can.

That’s good stuff to get them kids in the woods. I have 2 really good squirrell dogs I would be willing to show up and really get them kids fired up. My kids are grown and the only kid left is me. I hunt them every weekend and I bounce around all over Francis marion and other wmas. Pm me if interested. Robert

Here is the thing, as much as I would love to take you up on that offer since I was interested in getting another dog to hunt squirrels, but I am trying to help my kids understand that patience is part of hunting. They would love to see the dogs work but when you shoot one and move on to the next hot tree you actually miss the other 15 plus that were in that same area. So right now I am sticking to hunt an area and move on down the line so that they can stretch their legs out as needed. We are seeing large numbers of squirrels and it is mostly due to sitting in area long enough to learn the volume of squirrels as well as what they are doing for forage. May have to hit you up another day but thanks again for the offer!!!

Split We want to see more pics of those beauties in the woods. I smile every time I see them.
