trident pompano records

a quick scan of the past few years trident records indicate a prolific placer in many categories: mr. bill jones. of note i thought was that he holds the pompano records for nearly every recent year in the trident. i would think that this would not be possible without specifically targeting these fish that i generally regard to be a incidental catch in our waters. typically i see some small ones caught off the piers or in the surf but he has been getting large specimens. does anyone have any idea how/what he is doing to achieve these catches??? randomly catching them with fiddlers while sheeping??? live shrimp at the jetties??? Surf fishing a particular beach??? i have got to know!!!

Mid 90s I use to catch them towards the lighthouse on folly.Haven’t seen them since and I would also like to know any TTPs on catching/targeting them. It was usually for about a week. fun to catch and rather tasty fish

rather tasty is an understatement

Back when I was a kid in the 90s we caught nice sized ones (3-5 pounders) out in the breakers at morris island. Since then I have not caught one over 2 pounds. I think with all the sand pumping out at folly in recent years and the constant shifting of sand has really messed up the pompano fishing here in the charleston area. I belive mr. jones is probably not catching them in Charleston. I went to Coastal Carolina University up in myrtle beach for a year and surf fished up there quite a bit and caught more pompano in one day than I ever caught here in Charleston. The Grand Strand area seems to hold more pompano than the Charleston area. Water is much clearer and greener there than here. I think that has something to do with it.

Have seen quite a few taken at Folly Beach Fishing Pier. I don’t think they have any trouble catching them there. Also the surf on Folly produces them.

They are catching some on live shrimp around the jetties up around Little River. I have no idea around your way. I was a 5+ pounder last week that a dude in a jon boat caught!

fishboy is dead on… absolutely my opinion almost verbatim

do manage a nice one every once and a while. didn’t get a chance to fish for them this summer though…

“mr keys”

i am pretty sure Bill fishes out of the charleston area. friends of mine used to see him at the city marina back in college when they were working there. i guess he could go up to the MB area though.

Old bill fishes out of the city marina and mostly in the harbor. Live shrimp, float rig, and some structure will produce pompano this time of the year. You have probably been where he is catching them wrangler.
