Tried on Friday

Came down from Charlotte and fished out of IOP with son and daughter-in-law on Friday. Tide was 6.4 feet at high and -1.2 at low. To borrow a term from others, water was “gin clear”. Air temp was 33 when we put in and about 55 when we took out. Water temp varied between 40.5 and 41.5 in the morning and increased to 44 to 45 by the time we came in. Wind mostly calm (forecast at 7) from NE, then shifting to the east, then SE. Hit the water at 8:00 am and got back to the ramp at 5:30. Fished docks, creek mouths, deep holes, marsh edges, oyster rakes and flats. Fished mud minnows on corks, mud minnows free lining and tossed a variety of light colored plastics. Fished really slow or stationary, just like everyone recommends. Saw tailing reds along the marsh edge and found several huge schools of reds. Fished hard all day and never got a strike. We only saw two other boats (fishing) the entire day. D[:)Disappointed in not catching any fish but it was a great day fishing with my son and new daughter-in-law. A first for my daughter-in-law and I think she really enjoyed it! She is a real trooper!

Atleast you got out and enjoyed the day. Definitely can’t catch them from the house. I live in greenville and when we get a chance we go. Definitely had trips in the winter where we came up empty as well. She looks like she enjoyed herself.

That is a long haul to go fishing and then not catch anything. Good on you for just making the effort and introducing your new DIL to skinny water fishing. That area in Hamlin Sound is a good producer in warmer weather and the crazy tides didn’t help your chances. Good thing you fished Friday as today (Saturday) was nasty with the rain and all. It is frustrating to see those schools of uncooperative reds, but at least you can say you saw them. I hope your next report is full of catching reds in Charleston!

Other than a nice day on the water, it sucks you didn’t catch anything. The fish are not crazy about the low temps. It always gets harder in late Jan and Feb depending on what kind of winter we are having. I hope the trout were smart enough to move out before it got too cold. The last thing we need is another trout kill like 2009 and 2010. Good luck.

water temp like that means bad fishing ahead

Local Boy, Just having fun.

I caught one trout way up the Wando yesterday afternoon - so at least one survived these cold temps!
