Why do Trigger Fish have that distinct chemical smell? Tried to google but guess what comes up when you type fish + smell. They sure are tasty but Ive always wondered. Anyone?
I guess for the same reason some of the other good things in life smell like triggerfish…God made 'em that way.

Its the iodine in them… when u fillet them always make sure u trim the little dark red patchs off the fillet. They will make it taste quite unpleasent
Excellent advice.

I think its from eating the reef
If you ever pull a little piece up on your anchor or hook take a sniff
Same smell but if you can get past it they are mighty tasty
Thanks guys. Makes sense.
maybe it’s so blind people can hate them too!
look up trigger burgers on cook your catch. wife will let me fish anytime if I’m going for triggers! Awesome recipe.
If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.
We see no difference from other reef fish. Otherwise, use a serated pocket knift to outline the filet. That skin is tough.
