DC, Cinnamon Boy and myself decided to brave the forecast and head out to Comanche to catch some Beeliners, Black Fish, Triggers and whatever else we may be blessed with. The ride out was fine, but every 10 miles, the waves got bigger and wind a bit stronger. We pressed on and were rewarded with some nice size Beeliners at Comanche. The seas were not favorable for anchoring, so we did several drifts. Even with keeping one or both motors in gear, the wind and current pushed us off our spot consistently. That was working OK until Cinnamon Boy got his line wrapped in the prop?.not once?..not twice?.but three freaking times!!!
PRO TIP: when you have 40+ years experience fishing offshore, accept that your vision has faded significantly and use a high viz? line so you can keep an eye on it and stay out of the props.
After frustration took its toll from line in the props and the Cudas showing up to rob our catch, we decided to move in shallow to our Trigger spot. When we arrived, it was on. One trigger after another. With the school following up the hooked fish like 2 weeks ago, you simply dropped your bait in without opening the bale and fish on. May take my Cane Pole next time. It was a blast. Like catching ?Bream on steroids?.
How far out do you have to go to catch triggers? I caught my first one down in Florida this past Summer and after figuring out how to clean it, found it to be delicious.

DFreedom, we catch the triggers pretty consistently in 80’ of water and deeper. Have caught some smaller ones in 60’ and some “platters” in 170’ at the ledge. This time of year has always produced very well for us. Still catch several in the summer months though.
Bug Catcher, enjoy all your posts, thanks for taking the time to post your catch. Will have to try the burger soon. Thanks.
B&B, you should have pulled over and gave us a ride. I am sure you were a bit drier than we were and I do recall seeing you thinking “they are gonna stay nice and dry”. But we had fun and had the gear to stay somewhat dry. See ya soon at the SI ramp.
DF…I caught some triggers on Capers this past summer. Hell, that’s only 40’. Never caught any this time of year that close in. Only triggers I’ve caught this time of year was on Comanche like M & M.
