Anyone catching them right now? They don’t seem to be in our usual spots . Do they move out to warmer water this time of year? What depth do you find them at in the winter.
Thanks

Found them in 80’ over the weekend(Tigger’s/Vermillion’s). I notice them moving more inshore during the winter months.

We caught some at 60’ last Thursday, water temp was about 62.
Caught a few in 90ft on Sunday.
Good stuff, appreciate the info. We must be just missing them for whatever reason the last few trips but we were a bit deeper as well. Headed out this weekend if we get a break in the weather and now with grouper closed, I figured to try for some poor mans lobster. There s a recipe in the cooking section for trigger burgers that would go mighty good with football Sunday afternoon.
We caught 6 last Saturday in 75’ but they were all small. Back on the 31st we caught some good ones in 90’.

What are you guys dropping down for the triggers?
Usually going with cut/squid but I’ve been getting a lot of pesky pin fish every drop.
Triggers love squid, but also like a spanish sardine chunk for us.

Maybe you mean ringtail porgies?
We were using live shrimp on #2 hooks. Hooked them up the same as a sheepshead. They were mostly on the bottom. Caught a few sheepshead in the same spot as well.
Caught some in 100’. But had to switch to smaller hooks and crank up off the bottom. That said, we’ve not caught as many as this time last year? BSBs not running as large either.
I would agree that the BSB have been smaller this year compared to last but just as plentiful if not more. Bigger b liners it seems.

First, sorry for your loss…
Second, thanks in advance for getting the oysters…hope I get to meet you
Third, you think the BSB are staying offshore due to mild winter?
Thanks
Big bsb in 38 ft of water…this is the 4th yr in a row they have been there no matter what time we go.
SAFMC you suck!

Triggers were considered (trash) bycatch by the headboats when I was on them as a kid. We kept them in the hold and hung the snapper/grouper up around the boat back to the dock. We also ended up with them from the guys who didn’t want to work cleaning them.
Our best trigger action for size and quantity was in 200ft of water. Groupers were legal at the time.
We have hammered them in the winter in 100 feet or so
