04’ 90hp 4 stroke Yamaha. Won’t stay trimmed out at any angle. Had motor trimmed out slightly and put a little pressure against it and it gave. Trimmed it out about 6 inches and in about 15 minutes it dropped abot an inch. Any suggestions would be welcome.
Sounds like a leak or air in the system, havin same issue with a merc. Just found a small leak on top of tilt/trim pump motor and was able to tighten two of the bolts holding top on to pump but damned if can get to the other two bolts to tighten em!
Check fluid level, run trim up and down several times (not that kind of trim, get yer mind out of the gutter!)
recheck fluid level and add if needed, that usually will bleed any air out of system. Wait 10 mins for any air to bubble out of fluid and repeat. Be sure to only check fluid with motor in up position and on trailering lock.

Thanks Russ, tilted it all the way up and see signs of fluid on side of pump housing but can,t tell where it is coming from. I’m guessing from seal around piston rod. Trim it up and stop and it is solid. Trim down a couple of inches then lean on it and it will drop 3 more. Gonna try to find the service manual and investigate.
thats a single ram system
1 ram, 2 sets of valving 1 for trim, 1 for tilt
sounds like the debris in the valving for the trim
I’m now at www.teamcharlestonmarine.com
Also, be sure the swivel areas are lubricated enough…the pump/tilt may WANT to let the engine down, but if the engine is hanging up until you lean on it, it may just be bound some by corrosion.
Just another idea to check on–Good Luck w/ it.
This may be a dumb question, but the manual trim screw is tight?
Haven’t done any thing yet but did trim motor out about 5inches and it seems to hold. The original problem was when it was tilted up and then brought down. If you stopped on the way down and let it sit it would creep down.
