OK all ya’ll. I have a leaking trim cylinder on my F150 Yamaha. The seal kit is not so bad from SIM Yamaha. HOWEVER the tool for removal is $67 bucks. I have searched the net for anyone that rents those things with no luck. Anyone know of someone that rents those things in the low country?

Harbor Freight, and Northern Tool, both have an adjustable spanner wrench, for about ten bucks. Cheap tools, but I’ve had success with them in the past. Be sure to relieve the pressure on the unit, or it will make it harder to spin the caps off. Also, place a section of 3/4" PVC pipe over the pistons to keep from damaging them. A slipped wrench can cause a lot of misery on them. Use plenty of rust buster too!

Thank ya’ll for the advice. I used MN’s advice on the nail set and hammer procedure. It worked like a charm. Over all it was easy and uncomplicated. I would recommend DIY over taking it to an overloaded shop. Point to remember, be aware of the seals direction when you remove them. It is possible to install them backwards!

How did you notice the leak? Was it leaking bad enough to see it everywhere or was it something you felt while trimming up/down?

The engine stopped going up when I would hit the trim button. I manually raised the engine and refilled the little tank and got it to trim and tilt. With the engine all the way up I could see oil leaking from the left push rod. It was losing enough for a noticeable drip drip.
