My Bennett trim tabs were installed in 2006 and I assume that the fluid is that old as well. Does trim tab fluid need to be changed and how often?

No it does not have to be changed. Just make sure its up to the full line. MOST use ATF.

If you do not know what type of fluid is in there, I would change it before adding another type of fluid. Many hydraulic fluids are incompatible. Some idiot at a quicky oil change place added a generic brake fluid, and I ended up having to replace the master cylinder.
