Trim Tab Shuts Down GPS

Here’s a quirky problem. I run an old Garmin GPS that I really like. Simple to use and has all my numbers. I also run a 2 year old Humminbird GPS/Sonar combo right next to it. I usually keep that one on the bottom while the old GPS is navigating.

Now here’s the problem: As soon as I tweak the port trim tab the new Humminbird shuts down. Only the port tab and only the Humminbird. The old Garmin works fine and the starboard tab has no effect on the electronics.

Any idea how I can fix this?

they are sharing a power supply
isolate power to the electronics

Thanks, Chris, I’ll run down the wires and see where they meet. It’ll take me a few days to get to this project but I’ll post the results.

I had a similar issue with my radar. Usually it is a weak charge in the battery. The battery voltage sags just enough to shut the radar down.

I had the exact same problem with a new Garmin EchoMap last week. It was sharing power. I solved it by running the GPS + straight to the battery switch and the - to the Battery. In essence isolating the GPS. It Works perfectly now. if you do this just make sure you have an inline fuse to the GPS.
