I’ve started to get some serious rust building up on the cover that goes over the motor that controls the trim and tilt on my 90 hp yamaha 2 stroke. It’s the cylinder to the left side of the motor mounting bracket if you’re standing behind the boat looking at the back. Best I can tell from parts diagrams it’s not just a cover but it’s the stator assembly that goes over the motor armature. It has three screws that I can access fairly easily. My question is does that cover/stator assembly just slide right off or is it connected to the armature piece inside? If I can easily get it off I can sand and paint and bring it back to new. As it sits on the boat it’s almost impossible to paint without plastering paint on everything else. Anybody familiar with how that works?
I went through the same thing with my Yam. I hit it with Rustoleum and got two more years out of it before biting the bullet. The replacement looks plastic thus hopefully should last longer, In answere to your question, I didnt try to disassemble, just got in there the best I could with a small brush.

Funny, I have a 2003 70 Yamaha 2-stroke with the same problem. I know that eventually am going to have to replace it. I have the same question. Can you just replace the round cylinder part(cover) or do you have to replace the entire assembly?
Not to answer my own question but the word I got from a mechanic today was that the entire tilt/trim assembly had to be removed and his thought was since you were going through all that trouble why not go back new with the composite and avoid having to do it again in a couple years. Not sure how hard that is to do so if anybody has anymore ■■■■■■■■ I’d love to hear it. For now it’ll probably be the rustoleum route just to try to extend the life of it.
Replaced mine on a 60 yami 2 stroke, did the same thing, top rusted out.Was not too difficult to replace except for the back screw in the left corner(standing behind the motor).I had to loosen the bolts holding the motor to tilt the engine enough to get to that back screw, all in all not too bad of a job just a little tricky.
What about this composite replacement part and, can you just replace the cover or do you have to replace the entire stator assembly?
