So our boat’s been sitting at its new home, on our new lift , for the last two weeks . I went today to put it the water and give it run. Everything seems to be ok except the trim/tilt isn’t working. Bilge works, live well, nav light, even the engine turns over fine. But the trim just clicks. Whether I use the button on the motor or the one on the throttle, just a click.
Anyone know what’s going on? It’s a 2002 Yamaha 90 2stroke.
Thanks!
sounds like a corrosion issue either on positive or ground. lots of places that might be a problem but I would start at the engine.
if it clicks up and down from both switches, its most likely a bad trim motor.
tap on it with a wrench or small hammer while someone else is pressing the button, and it may start to work, but if so, its definitely gonna need to be replaced
Just because you hear the relay clicking when you hit the buttons does not mean the contacts inside the relays are opening and closing. I would start by checking the relay contacts with a meter. Depending on the circuit design it is possible for failure in both directions. You can also check the motor with a meter. These are series wound DC motors and usually use two double pole relays for reversing polarity of the power to the motor (up and down). It could be the motor, but I would definitely check the relays first. You should also be able to find the two leads from the relays that power the motor, disconnect them from the circuit, and power the motor straight from the battery with jumpers; swapping polarity for change in direction. It is a series motor so it would be electrically impossible to fail in one direction only.

Thanks guys!! I guess I’ll be busy this coming weekend trying to figure if it’s the relays or the motor! Judging by the rust on the motor, I’m betting on that being the problem.
