Trinidad Tarpon- summary and a couple of pics.

Another day of fishing that I will remember for ever.
Got to the big fish spot, 15 mins from where we are staying and 10 mins later Chris is in.
2.5 hrs later, boated, really nice fish 170 lb. Fish took us back to the dock were we are staying.
I had a nice 185lb fish on the heavy gear, got it in in about 30 mins or so.
Threw an artificial for a bit (Zman) and had a nice fish.

I was 3 for 3 on the day, boat had 7, 3 over 150 lb!

It was amazing, we stayed on a tiny little isalnd just off Chaguaramas. I think the place was in the Angorstura family, the people that make Bitters. I didnt realize they also make and age some amazing Rum which we enjoyed!
People were so friendly and accommodating, this is gonna be an annual trip for sure. Had one on a fly last day, got me tangled around some rocks after 10 mins or so, but seeing the tarpon come up and hit the fly was worth going on the trip by itself!

cheers

If you don’t mind me asking… what did the trip cost?

Did yall fly in to Port of Spain? I went on many mission trips there and would sneak off a few days early to wet a hook. The people there were so glad to have up come and help build and offer our medical care. Love the off shore fishing in Tobago. Never got to try the tarpon. Had a man at one of the churches we built tell us about catching them off the rocks with a soda bottle as a reel. Caught a lot of meat fish off the lower end towards Venezuela, would feed the whole village we stayed at. Those folks would rather eat baracuda than grouper. My doctor advises me not to travel that part of the world any more after my all my heart problems. Glad ya’ll had a good trip. Didn’t I read on this site your folks were English?

JR Waites put the trips together. He is a local guide who specializes in Tarpon.

The cost was 2,800 per person, would have been about 2,400 if our fourth hadn’t dropped out. Excludes airfare but covers everything else.

We did fly into Port Of Spain. About 45 minutes or so to the dock, then 15 minutes to the island in a Panga. The charter boat picked us up in am at dock at the lodge we were staying. The first big fish spot was about a 10 minute ride!

We had contact wirh some Venezuelan long line fisherman to get more bait. All the fisherman wanted were a couple of cans of coke. I think it must be a tough life being in venuzela right now. The fisherman couldn’t sell their catch at home as they got ripped of, so they. And into Trinidad waters to sell their catch, they are not allowed to land in Trinidad & Tobago.

Here is the summary with a few pics.

Incredible trip to Trinidad last week fishing for Tarpon. J.R. Waits put this together, went with Joska Vasil, and Chris T (Tina Negrette Tragakis. Stayed at a lodge on a private island right on the water. Captain Jonathan De La Rosa put us on fish every day. First day, 30 minutes out I had seen more Tarpon rolling than I had seen all summer in Charleston. Joe had first fish on within 15 mins of lines in, turned out to be a 180lb Tarpon!
Over the course of 3 days we caught and released 30 Tarpon with 3 of them being over 150LB.
I ended up with a 185LB, plus I caught two on artificials, (ZMan Heroz). JR and I went out for a half day fly fishing for them. I will always remember the site of a 60lb ish Tarpon hitting my fly. Had it on for 10 minutes or so but it ran to cover and I lost it in the rocks.
The chef at the lodge cooked some memorable local meals, and we all really enjoyed the local dark Rum.
This will be an annual trip for us. If you want to catch some Tarpon connect with JR,

Great pictures, Is this time of the year the best time to go? Love to leave here at 30 deg and spend a week there at 85 deg, eating fresh tomatoes, pineapple and mangos.

Hey Boatpoor

The best time is actually the summer, so August is the peak.
But for me, after catching a 180lb fish, a few around 100,and ones between 40 and 80,
My preference would be catching a bunch of the smaller ones. One of the guys had a fish on for 2.5 hours, it’s stops being fun after an hour or so!

Cheers.
