Huge thanks to Sellsfish and 23Sailfish for help with finding bait. We found them quick and easy, loaded both baitwells with menhaden and rolled out. Had 40inchreds, Trey and 3 other very green crew on the boat. 1 knock down trolling between 70-100’ on black banks and ended up with a 4 line mess. Decided not long after to call it on the troll for kings and head offshore. Went to the ledge and fished on a nice ledge in 160’ up to 145’. Grouper bite seemed hot before the current/wind changed and pushed us off the ledge, both the scamp and Graysby caught on squid on bottom. 10’ shark showed up and left 2 friends a 25 and 30lb Cobia. Caught both of those on Menhaden pitching on one and one hit a balloon. 30 min before we were pulling anchor and heading in, about 1:30, 4 mahi showed up and hung out. Quickly got a slinger over the rail and started working on trying to get the bull. Not until I got a frisky menhaden nearly on his nose did he bite. Unfortunately it was on light spinning tackle and we had already had 3 lines pop bottom fishing. 30+ minutes later the bull met the gaff. Made 6 circles around the boat. All in all a really good mixed bag of fish for 2 hours of fishing on anchor.
Hey guy, I am fishing out of St Helena sound and have been loosing my mind trying to find menhaden this year. I was wondering if you would where you were fishing out of and where you found the menhaden? any hints will be appreciated!
