what would be the average speed you troll for king mpr new at this
live bait, artificial or ballyhoo
I troll with artificial between 4 to 7 mph on the gps. Depends too on how the baits are running. Sometimes they start to propeller if you get going too fast. Of course, I’m not an expert bait rigger either.
The slow troll is bumping in and out of gear just to keep forward motion.

Larry, One of the most important things about trolling is, it is not how fast you troll or what you troll with, you have to make sure that your hooks are razor sharp. The fish will normall hook themselves while trolling. The speed that you troll depends of what type of bait you are trolling with. Go to Souths Finest over at Ebernezer Plaza and buy you a deep running Rapala the Orange is the best. Put you a four ft. wire leader on there and you will catch all the kings you want. But if you are like me, I like rigging ballyhoo, which takes just alittle experience. Riggin ballyhoo is like riding a bicycle, once you get the hang of it, you will never forget and you will get better and better every time you rig your next one. Have any questions call me. Henry

Live bait we run between 1-3 kts. Don’t troll artificials at all. It is drifting more or less.

i’m new to fishing in this area. where are best spots to troll for king? using cigar minnows ok around here. we just bought em frozen in the gulf and would troll a few miles off shore and the kings and spanish hit em all day.
We mostly use live menhaden, sometimes bluefish if we can get them. The best thing to do to get some good spots is to go to Haddrells in Mt. P or West Ashley and get one of the Maps unique fishing charts. It has every live bottom and wreck off Charleston just about. We go out to 90 ft (30 miles) sometimes but there are some good reefs (Charleston 60, Shady Grady etc) about ten miles off. People troll the shipping channel but I have never had much luck there. The best thing would be to go into Haddrells and talk to the guys in there. Hope this helps.
