trolling in 22 ft bayboat?

Any advice as to trolling in my 22 ft pathfinder “nearshore” this time of year? I hear kings peak out in October. The kings section of the forum has been pretty stagnant.

I have a small downrigger and a few TLD15’s and was thinking of trolling no more than 4-8 miles outside of the jetties (either running south, north or straight out east. Does anyone feel I have a shot at catching kings in this depth this time of year? And if so, what direction and how far out?

Thanks for any help!

If you have a mapsunique chart, there’s a stretch of live bottom numbers to the south once you leave the jetties. Slow trolling menhadden over that will produce Kings. Best king action is in the peak of summer. Not sure if they’re gone or not yet, but the water temperature is a little high for this time of year still.

If you strike out with the kings, bottom fish that same area and it’ll produce BSBs, sharks, and other bottom dwellers.

kibler–you can crush the kings at just about any live bottom area or artificial reef this time of year. That is very good advice from 23 Sailfish. Fish typically not as big in the fall(15 lbs pretty average), but you can catch a lot. I’ve had several 20+ fish days in October.

Glad to hear that- I know there was a tournament 2 weeks ago and another one this weekend (I am not entering) so I figure there are still kings out there.

We were gonna try to get live pogies with sabikis or cast net in the morning off the bouys and near dynamite hole.

Any advice on where the bait can be found in the morning? It’ll be about 8 am (near high tide) when we roll out that way.

Maps unique looks like a great resource, but I can’t really get any good coordinates from it to plug into GPS. Anyone want to PM me some?
