Trolling motor opinion

What size TM would u guys recommend for a scout 177?

Most thrust you can afford. 70 minimum will keep you good in current and wind.

I have a 17’ Whaler and a Minn Kota Riptide 55. Does a good job for me!

i have a 17 sea pro bay and i have an 80. but i agree with arthur, get the biggest you can afford.

I have a 55 on my 17’ bay boat. It does fine, but there are alot of times I wish it was stronger. It will work just fine for you, but you will never regret bigger.

Had a 70 lb 24v motor guide on my 18 action craft, was dang nice and would wip that boat around in any wind and any current. Have a 65lb auto pilot on my pathfinder now and it is also plenty strong, but i wouldn’t want any less. I wouldn’t get a 12 volt trolling motor on that boat, might be "fine"in ideal conditions but will tick you off at some point. 70-80lb 24v system is the ticket. Add an onboard charger while your at it.

Thanks guys for the replies and opinions!

I had a 55 on my 16’ McKee. It was just fine in wind and current. I used it against the tide for gigging a few times. My Garmin was showing 3.5mph against the tide at WOT. I mostly used it to maneuver around docks. If I had to go 1/4 mile up the river, I used the outboard.

There are some advantages of a 55. Only need 1 battery (weight and expense) and you can charge on the go off the outboard easily.

I have a 80lb 24v GW with a 60-inch shaft on my Scout 177SF. Works well. Would not go with a lower-powered one.
