Trolling Motor Questions

How do you know when you need a new one? Does they just quit, or do they just slow down and then die?

Also, I have noticed lately on other people’ boats they mounted on the right side . I have mine on the left. Did I mount it wrong?

If it is just slowing down then check battery to make sure it is not bad.
I have mine on the left side because my spare tire is on the right side of my trailer winch post. Just in case I need to let it down while it is on the trailer (for what ever reason) so the tire would not be in the way. I don’t think side really matters.

Side doesn’t matter, especially if you use a remote control. If it already mounted just leave it. Be more concerned about where it ends up after it is deployed then where it sits on the deck when it is up. I’m right handed so I hold the rod in my right hand ready to cast and control a manual TM with my left.

Slow TM could be due to corrosion some. Clean EVERY connection from the battery to the motor and replace the plug ($25) before you even think of buying a new one.

I’m getting ready to S-can my electric motor and buy one of those new ones that will hold you in a spot automatically.Just get rid of that old pos , you know you want a new one. Also, I have mine mounted on the left side,so you’re good to go.

YOU MOUNTED IT WRONG
NORTHERN HEMISPHERE REQUIRES TROLLING MOTORS BE MOUNTED ON STARBOARD SIDE.
CLOCKWISE PROP ROTATION WITH THE PROP MOUNTED ON STARBOARD SIDE WILL CAUSE FLUCTUATION IN THE MAGNETIC FIELDS GENERATED FROM THE ELECTRIC MOTOR WHEN SUBMEGED IN SALT WATER.
THIS WILL CAUSE THE MOTOR TO GRADUALLY RUN SLOWER AND EVENTUALLY JUST DIE, AND NEED TO BE REPLACED PREMATURELY.

that was a joke. please no one take that seriously.
most of the motors we mount are on the left side, because that just seems to bee the most out of the way for stuff like hatches, etc.
it really doesn’t matter, just the closer to the center line of the boat when deployed the easier it is to control the boat.
As far as when to replace, you will know when its time.
when the pain of keeping it becomes more than the pain of paying for a new one, you will have a new one.

Rough day to end a long week but that just made it better

Ohh, you will know when it’s time to get a new one. Nice comic relief reply there CV. Yeah, it doesn’t really matter which side you mount it on. I actually had one boat where it was on the starboard side just because that was the best place for it on that boat. All my other boats have it on the port side though.
