Trolling Motor Repair

The prop on my trolling motor struggles to spin and often makes a hideous “squeaking” sound when it does get going. Removed the prop to clean the axle, but there wasn’t any stray fishing line or debris around the axle, so I’m guessing that the axle is slightly bent.

From a time and cost standpoint, is it possible to replace this axle? Is it something I could do myself, or is it more labor-intensive than it seems? As always, any ■■■■■■■■ is greatly appreciated.

Everything can be replaced on a trolling motor, but for something like that, I would suggest the nearest authorized repair center. Also take into consideration the age of the unit. Sometimes its more cost efficient to replace it. Did you hit something? Normally the prop will be torn to pieces before the shaft is damaged.

With what you describe, I would lean more towards bearings being bad.

BB; You can run tm without prop at dead low speed and observe the
shaft from side view and usually see any bend if any , but you must
run at slooow. By the description you gave I think pitviper is right it sounds to me like there might be corrosion or rust in bearings/bushings . If so try standing tm on nose and put a few drops of pen oil on shaft at bearing and continue to run on slow for little while , If </font id=“red”>bearing/bushing end cap seal is bad oil will penetrate and usually stop noise , but you still have seal/bearing problem that will need to go to shop for !! Also this only works for prop end of shaft , don’t know how to check nose end without disassembly!
Like pitviper said (may be cheaper to replace unit???):face_with_head_bandage::face_with_head_bandage:
Good luck hope this helps a little:smiley::smiley::smiley:

Thank you all for your ■■■■■■■■.

Gail, your “test” is a great idea and one that I’ll definitely be putting to use.

And Pit, it’d be nice if the issue is with the bearings (as compared to the axle).

And Easy, well, uh, thanks for your leadership:wink:

Anybody have any idea of what something like this may cost? I’ll obviously do some research myself, but was wondering if anyone’s ever had any work done on their (trolling) motor. If so, was it a charge for parts and a set labor cost, or was it an hourly labor rate?

Check with Chris V, Charleston Marine is a authorized Minn Kota service center, maybe he can give you an idea.

BB;
Ya got my curiosity up and I googled repair of M-Kota TMs
and there is a lot of good videos of the bearing and brush
replacements, biggest problem I could imagine would be having
access to parts !!!Locate parts supply and you could most likely
DIY :smiley::smiley::smiley:

we stock the minn kota mounts, and the parts for the motors and the mounts. a quick release puck is around $20

IF I RESPOND IN ALL CAPS, ITS NOT ON PURPOSE, AND I AM NOT YELLING

the “axle” you are reffering to, is actually the shaft coming from the center of the armature, and if its bent, you have to replace the entire armature.
if you send me the serial number, I can get a parts diagram and prices. the parts really aren’t that expensive, and we stock most of them.
