I am in the market for a 24v saltwater trolling motor. I’ve only used a MK riptide 101 hand control on a larger bay boat. I’m now shopping for a trolling motor to go on a 17’ skiff that will be used in mostly smaller waters for fishing and gigging. So here’s my questions:
-Minn Kota or Motor Guide? - any big reason to go with one over the other? other brands?
-Hand control vs wireless (foot control)- I really like the profile of the wireless units but they seem like they’d be awkward if you were trying to do some quick steering around those oyster rakes. Any experience here? This is probably my biggest question/concern.
-Are the shafts easily replaceable on the MotorGuides? I tore apart the Minn Kota before… shaft doesn’t appear to be easily removable on those units, but MK claims you’ll never need to do so.
I’m sure there is much more that I can’t think of at the moment, so if you have any other information I am interested.
If you have a 24v you would like to sell, even if it needs some repair, send me a message.
Thanks
I have never owned a motorguide so I cant speak to brands. But my last boat had the minnkota copilot and I loved it. I really liked the fact I could steer from the poling platform or rear of the boat. I put the remote control on my right wrist so I could steer while fighting fish. I also had the remote foot control which I used as well. The speed control was awkward but I just used the foot control to steer when hands were not readily available. The autopilot would be nice so you can point it in one direction and let it adjust automatically. The ipilot would be the best of course but a lot of $$$. I have a hand controlled one on my new boat, which is being worked on as we speak at Charleston Marine, so I will know soon which I prefer as soon as it is fixed. Not sure I helped very much, but good luck!

I would look at the Minn Kota I-Pilot. Check out their website. It is amazing what they will do.
