Would a 55# be enough?

55# 12 volt will work in light current and no wind
add current and wind, and 55# just isnt enough
70-80# 24 volt

we sell and service minn kota
when we first started, we were having a terrible time getting them done in a reasonable time. it was taking longer to fix trolling motors than it was boats, but in the past week or so, we are definately catching up.
not sure if anyone local is still a repair shop for motorguide, so keep that in mind before you buy. they all NEED repair at some point, especially when used in salt water.

I just recently bought a 55# MK Riptide from Chris V for my 13 whaler (thanks Chris, its awesome)
It pulls my Whaler easily but I also have an 18 seapro and think what Chris said above is spot on. It would work in a slight flow but wouldn’t keep up in much more.
In 5th speed, it easily pulled the Whaler against a strong spring tide, and held steady in 4th speed. Of course the whaler all-in weighs under 600#.

Just to add a little support to what Chris told you, I can thoroughly attest that too much is better than not enough when it comes to a trolling motor. And underpowered TM is a pain. 80# would be a minimum for me on a 19-footer. Had a coule of 52#-ers that came with a couple of 20-foot bass boats. Insufficient–especially if you put them in current (meant for use on lakes). 82# is just right for my 17 Scout with the 150 on the back in the rivers (except and I honestly wish I had a little more power when I get in heavy current and want work a spot for a while, but no room for three batteries). It will just barely overcome the heaviest current around. Make sure you get some good, high-capacity batteries if you’re gonna fish moderate to heavy current. They are just as important as the motor–if not more–if you’re fishing current. I personally like the Stowaways or the Nautilus Marine Gold, but just check the specs for reserve and AH, and get the highest available for the size/class that you can fit in your boat (probably size NG-27).

BTW, Chris, can you replace shafts on the Minn Kotas in house?

Barrier Island is a Motorguide warranty center

Good to know, FT. Thanks. I asked Chris about Minn Kota shafts because I busted a shaft on one and couldn’t get it repaired in town at the time. Had to take it to Columbia. I bought a Motor Guide because of that. Wanted to know if Chris could fix a shaft if I ever got another Minn Kota in the future. So, it’s good to know that he’s fixing them now. I have something in need of repair on my Motor Guide now, though, (I’m rough on my TM’s) so I’ll give Barrier Island a shout. They are good people and do good work on motors from my experience. Din’t know they fixed Motorguides, though. Thanks for letting me know that about them.

I also bought a MK TM from Chris back in April and vouch for him. It’s a 55# hand control with the variable speed feature. It works great on my 1720 KW. I do have to put it on 100% power if the tide is moving fast and the wind is against me, but 95% of the time I don’t go over 50%. I went with the MK over the MG because of the flexible shaft and the $50 rebate this past spring.

Chris V,
MG has come out with a 45# Great White variable with either a 14" or 18" shaft(can’t remember) made for kayaks- $279.
Could you do that to a similar MK- total cost?
Thanks,
Bill

id go with a minn kota 80# with 62" shaft. i had this on my 18cc sea pro and it had good pull and plenty of lenght into water. you could do some measurements and consider the 52" but you prob find the 62" will be better, especially once you get into some chop and your bow starts rising.

on a side note, I put I Pilot on my Riptide ST and used it for the first time today. This technology is unbelievable. The Spot Lock feature will hold you extremely well even in today’s stiff wind and current. We usually anchor a good bit but never had to use it today. If you have a wireless minn kota get this. You will not be sorry.
