Trolling motor

Hello, I wanted to say this is a very informative site.

I have a Key Largo 160 (15’10") and I am torn between a minn kota 55 or 70 lb thrust. I have been reading other people’s post and notice that everyone almost always recommend the 70. Would this be the same recommendation for my boat, even though my boat is a little smaller than most of the other posts? Thanks.

Do you want to carry 2 batteries for trolling or 1? Do you want to be able to charge your battery with the outboard running? With 70 you will need 24v with 2 batts.

I had a 55 on my 16’ McKee and it would move 4.6 mph by GPS. I had no issues with going against the tide or wind. I had a batt switch and could charge my trolling motor battery while moving from spot to spot.

I would only use the trolling motor when gigging and I was impressed with how long it ran. 4 hours and batt only at 12v even.

Thanks for the reply. I found a really good deal on 70lb thrust, and I went ahead and ordered it. I had been thinking about it for some time now, and figured if I ever decided to get a bigger boat I would already have a trolling motor to use. I also thought the 24v would be nice to use for shrimping instead of running the outboard so much. I just hope the 70 is not too much or the extra battery is too much for that boat.
