Trolling Motors

This has probably been covered somewhere but can’t find it.

I have SeaArk 14’ jon with flat deck on the front. I want to mount 12v trolling motor and am looking at Greatwhite and Riptide. Can someone give me some pros/cons/recommendations?

Thanks

I have the Minn Kota SP 12V model with remote control on my 17’ bay boat, and absolutely love it. I also just bought the cordless foot pedal and it works great too. The nice thing is that you can use them both at the same time. I use the remote when I am sight fishing and use the foot pedal when I have a fish on. I do wish I had the Auto Pilot feature where you set the direction and the motor accounts for wind, current, and keeps you straight. It was just a little out of my range at the time. I would go with the bow mount motor. Never had a greatwhite so I can’t comment on that.

I have had both and I would stick with the Riptide. I now have the auto pilot model which I like but at times I wish I would have stuck with the tiller model due to simplicity and less moving parts.

If you’re asking about thrust amount, the general rule is you need to have 5 pounds of thrust for every 200 pounds of weight. So if your whole rig with gas, motor, people and gear is 1000 pounds, you need at least a 25-lb thrust motor. Any thing above that thrust that uses a single 12v battery is plenty (more is better).

They make brackets to mount a transom-mount motor on the bow (that’s what I use on my 14ft jon boat, a 28-lb thrust minn kota freshwater model). I have a Riptide 55 handcontrol on my 17’ key west and love it, but I’m pushing around 2000lbs. Never owned a motorguide. Hope that helps.
